At the General Election in Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross on 7th June 2001, 24867 votes were cast (approximately 60% of the total number of eligible voters) with the following result:

John Thurso (Liberal Democrats): 9041 votes.

Michael Meighan (Labour): 6297 votes.

John MacAdam (Scottish National Party): 5273 votes.

Robert Rowantree (Conservative): 3513 votes.
