Stop the Crofting Bill

Crofting

In 1886, William Gladstone's Liberal Government passed the Crofters' Holdings Act, enshrining meaningful security of tenure for crofters, ensuring fair rents and allowing crofts to be passed down through families. The Act drew a line under centuries of injustice which had brought misery upon crofting families and helped to devastate the economic mainstay of our area.

The principles established by the 1886 Act have been the bedrock of crofting in the Highlands & Islands ever since, but the SNP Government's proposed Crofting Reform Bill now puts them under serious threat.

John Thurso, Jamie Stone and John Farquhar Munro are leading a campaign to have the Bill withdrawn so the core tenets of crofting law can be retained and passed on to another generation.

End fuel poverty in the Highlands

Fuel poverty

Fuel poverty is a huge issue in the far north of Scotland and one that has hit many families particularly hard this winter.

Many households have little choice other than to use heating oil or LPG as there is no access to mains gas and it is those families that have been hard hit by soaring oil prices. While there are schemes available that can help pay for better insulation or an improved central heating system, many houses in the north are old and thus the most expensive to upgrade and it is not possible for many people.

In this, one of the coldest winters on record, the situation is simply unacceptable.

The Highland Liberal Democrats John Thurso, Charles Kennedy and Danny Alexander are leading a campaign for action. They are running a petition to the House of Commons calling for emergency financial help targeted at those reliant on heating oils or solid fuels in order to level the playing field with those households with access to mains gas or electricity.
