Broadband within reach for Thurso

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 24th Jul 2003

Local MP John Thurso has written again to BT Chairman, Sir Christopher Bland, to press the case for exchanges in the Far North to be broadband enabled. BT currently has a threshold target of 500 registrations for the Thurso Exchange and has received 447.

John Thurso said:

"At 500 registrations, Thurso has one of the highest threshold targets anywhere in the UK, and with 447 already received by BT, it is clear that there is a very substantial demand for broadband from within the area. I have therefore specifically requested that BT consider lowering their target to 450 as the introduction of broadband would not only provide new services for new customers but would also provide a very welcome boost for many small businesses.

I have also asked BT to confirm what is the current registration threshold for Wick".

The MP added:

"I would encourage anyone in Caithness with an interest in broadband to make sure they register with BT at the earliest opportunity".
